Mesotherapy consists of beauty injections to counter cellulite on legs, reduce water retention and even reverse skin aging. But mesotherapy is not just an aesthetic treatment and it can do much more.

Mesotherapy is a technique used both in medicine and in aesthetics, based on the subcutaneous injection of particular drugs, chosen according to the type of problem to be solved.

It is highly appreciated for its ability to act directly on the affected area without involving other organs, as happens for example by introducing substances systemically (mouth or vein), and consequently limiting possible side effects.

In aesthetic medicine, its use is mainly aimed at the treatment of cellulite, in particular the stagnation of liquids and waste in the tissues. The substances used in mesotherapy against cellulite, in fact, have the task of promoting blood and lymphatic flow, restoring softness and tone to the skin.

What is it?

The term mesotherapy derives from mesoderm, the median layer of the skin that can be reached by the substances injected by means of specific, very thin needles.

The technique was developed in the late 1950s by the French physician Michel Pistor, who sensed how drugs could be much more effective if inoculated directly into the area that needed them. The secret, in fact, consists in performing injections of small doses of the drug as close as possible to the affected area.

Mesotherapy prevents these substances from expanding throughout the body, involving organs and tissues that would not need them and could therefore react negatively. Finally, anaesthetic is also added to the drug to further reduce the discomfort caused by the injections.

Advantages

In summary, mesotherapy has significant advantages over other therapies:

- Targeted therapy that treats disorders without involving surrounding tissues.

- Requires limited quantities of drug, reduced compared to those generally used generally.

- Being a localized treatment, it acts faster and its effects last longer.

- An actual improvement is commonly visible from the first sessions.

- It is a basically painless technique.

Aesthetic mesotherapy

As we have said, mesotherapy is used for the treatment of numerous aesthetic imperfections, among which cellulite is certainly in first place but it is not the only one. In fact, revitalizing substances can be used for anti-aging purposes, specific drugs for the treatment of acne as well as anti-oedema and capillary protective products to improve swollen legs.

For this purpose, lipolytic substances are mainly used, suitable for breaking down adipose accumulations. Among them, we distinguish between real drugs such as Phosphatidylcholine, L-carnitine, Deoxycholic acid, and Caffeine, and phytotherapeutic active ingredients like Centella asiatica (AKA Gotu Kola) and Horse chestnut.

In particular, the first substances we mentioned directly attack fat cells, releasing their content which will then be disposed of naturally by the body; the latter, on the other hand, stimulate the elimination of waste and excess fluids, promoting better blood and lymphatic circulation.

The result will be smoother, toned, and elastic skin in areas such as the buttocks, hips, thighs and abdomen; but mesotherapy can also be applied to the knees and ankles.

Treatment

Before undergoing mesotherapy, the specialist must check the general state of health and rule out any allergies to the substances used in the treatment.

As previously mentioned, the needles used for mesotherapy are thinner than usual to facilitate the injection and make it less painful. Generally, an anaesthetic is mixed with the substances used to further reduce the discomfort of the procedure.

The mesotherapy session, in general, may last from about 5 to 30 minutes depending on the extent of the area to be treated.

The first results are visible immediately, but for a decisive and lasting improvement about 6-10 sessions are necessary, to be undergone once or twice a week. Other treatments can be associated with mesotherapy, such as lymphatic drainage and Carboxytherapy.

Contraindications and side effects

Although side effects from passing the drug to surrounding organs and tissues are excluded, bruising from injections can occur. However, bruises should disappear on their own within a few days.

The contraindications mainly concern allergies to one or more of the types of substances used.
